The TV series tell about the primary characters’ adventures in everyday American life through his/her daily interactions with friends, family, peers, and social environment.
This is a typical modern American family in a small city located at San Francisco metropolitan area. The family includes two working parents and a brother Tony and a sister Sally. Grandpa and grandma live just 20 miles away from the family therefore visit the family often. Tony and Sally occasionally meet with other members of their extended family as well.
Sally, a first grader and the series' main character, enjoys watching children's television shows and doing other things to the displeasure of Tony. Sally often bothers Tony and breaks Tony's stuff by pretending to know everything. Many of the series' plots revolve around tensions between Sally and her brother Tony, and between Sally and her best friend Kora. In school, Sally occasionally acts like a boss to her classmates. Her outspoken demeanor sometimes has a negative effect on her relationships with friends and relatives. Sally is naturally better than Tony in some activities such as finding something at park/home or helping mom doing something, which causes Tony to envy her.
Tony, Sally’s older brother and a third grader, possesses a sincere partiality towards reading science fiction books, watching television programs, playing sports, surfing the Internet, playing video games, and spending time with his friends, mostly Bobby and Alan. Since Tony is several years older than Sally, he knows more, so he always thinks Sally is too little to play with him.
Kora, a very talented girl, is Sally’s best friend in the same class. She enjoys sports, singing, and playing online games with her friends. She is the best player on her soccer team. Kora, Sally, Lisa, and Julia love to play and go to city library together. Thanks to Kora’s over-reaction personality and Sally’s bossy demeanor, Sally and Kora often fight, but always make up in the end, although sometimes it takes several days or weeks.
Mom and Dad are often involved in resolving issues and challenges, and promoting confidence, responsibility, and creativity. Furthermore, Sally considers her Grandma a very special person in her life.
The TV series reflect the real life of an authentic American family in 2009, and deal with issues and challenges facing today's youth in academic, social, and health aspects, such as interpersonal peer relationships (peer pressure, self-esteem, conflict resolution, etc.), the potentially harmful effects of electronic media (too much television, video games, text messaging, etc.), the impact of the “No Child Left Behind” Act from United States federal government, and the family role in child development.
There is a strong emphasis on the educational value, American cultural competence, and social responsibility. The TV series often deal with American style practices to develop child’s self-esteem, independence, social responsibility, team play, and creativity.
